More Crocs and Rock Art

9 August

Up at 5:30 this morning to catch the sunrise Yellow Water Cruise, where we were treated to a display of an incredible abundance of bird life,

plus more crocodiles at closer quarters this time and mobile what’s more.

The cruise included a stop along the way to watch a spectacular sunrise and breakfast at the lodge at Cooinda
The rest of the day was spent exploring the Nourlangie area, looking at the rock art there,

climbing up to a couple of look outs to enjoy the views, one over the Anbangbang waterhole that was so low we could hardly see it and the other Gunwarddehwardde lookout that looked over to the cliffs of Arnhem land
We couldn’t leave Kakadu without checking out Jabaru. Nothing much of interest to us there except a refuel, but also the Ranger Uranium mine just down the road. We drove out to have a sticky beak. What an eye opener..... It is a massive hole in the ground with huge piles of the excavated rock and dirt around it.

  1. I have just caught up with your blog for the first time. It brings back lots of memories from the trip with Peter and David in 2001. ( No digital camera then !!) All your photos look familiar especially the drawings of the "three legged men" at Nourlangie Rock. We camped further south at Nourlangie creek and did quite a bit of fishing for 3 days. A German girl got taken by a croc three weeks later at the spot where we launched the dinghy !!! (Be careful).

Are you going through Kununurra to the Bungle Bungles ( Purnululu N.P). I lost my Bungle Bungle cap that I purchased in Kununurra overboard out of the boat last week off Tangalooma. I WOULD LOVE ANOTHER ONE. ( Red and black !!!) Bought at at a big shop that sold souvenirs and Argyle diamonds ( Bought some of those too !!)

Just spoke to David, he was camping at Lawn Hill last weekend with Meg. He is currently at Camooweal with MRD doing a worshop with the Aboriginals. Talk again soon, Mark.

  3. Thanks guys. There is a place on the junction of the Victoria River & Big Horse Creek called Timber Creek with a camping ground and servo etc. We saw lots of crocs in the river when fishing there. You could hire boats. Beautiful scenery driving through Victoria River Gorge.
Heaps of places to go from Kununurra ( Wyndham, The Grotto, Prison Tree, etc etc.) A must do is to watch the sunset from Kellys Knob ( Kununurra)( Take a bottle of wine !!!)
By the way you will have your vehicles searched for fresh fruit etc. at the W.A. border. They made us dump ours.
    Enjoy. Mark.

  4. Hi again Mark
We are actually at the campground you mention right now. Were going to camp down near the creek, glad we didn't though - myriads of noisy flying foxes.
I am making the most of having the internet connection now before we head off again into Keep River so will be putting updated posts on the blog too. Thanks for the heads up re the fruit and vege. Fortunately we already knew so have been using it all up. Heaps of honey on my cereal this morning!!!!!
